How-to Color Your Hair at Home

So, you’re stuck at home and your roots are out of control! What can you do when you cannot get in to see your hairdresser?

I found a “deliver to your door” hair color company, eSalon and absolutely love their product.

Let me begin by saying, I am picky when it comes to color. I have only ever used professional color, NEVER store bought. I am a trained cosmetologist and have been since 1997! So you can imagine my distraught when the world stopped turning and we began sheltering in place due to COVID 19, aka the Coronavirus Pandemic, and I did not have any professional color supplies at home to use. And listen, not to make light of the virus, but seriously, my gray strands coming in were atrocious (first world problems)! I mean, I’m all for getting old gracefully, (or as I like to say, aging gratefully) but I truly believe that if the good Lord wanted us to go grey, he would not have put into the genius minds of chemists and colorists the miracle of hair color!

Needless to say, I had to find something and I took my quest to the web. Low and behold, I found eSalon color. I’m used to purchasing color according to a number and letter combination. For example, I typically buy a 5NN and 5B and mix that with a 20 vol developer. But for the novice, eSalon does a great job guiding one through a series of questions to determine what color is best. I got a “dark brown” color, which makes sense for what I usually get.

It took a little longer than expected for the color to arrive due to the demand on the company during this unprecedented time, but I was relieved when it came in! Inside the box were the following:

  • An applicator bottle containing the developer.

  • Color (which came personalized with my name on it - LOVE)

  • An applicator brush

  • Two sets of gloves

  • Stain guard and stain remover.

  • A packet of shampoo and conditioner

  • Instructions for use (also personalized)

First, a side-note for salon blondes: *It is my opinion that if you normally get highlights or balayage to a light blonde, you should not attempt to recreate that at home. At best, you can order a root lifting color 2-3 levels above your natural color. Bump to your roots up lighter so they blend better with your highlighted color, but be very careful not to overlap on bleached, processed, or high-lift treated color.

I opened it up and took to Instagram LIVE to demo. (I edited the video down to the essentials to share here with you.) Here are some quick guidelines for applying color on yourself:

  1. Apply stain guard to the skin, avoiding the hair.

  2. Mix together color and developer.

  3. Apply to roots using the bottle or a bowl and brush.

  4. Once color has set for 25 minutes, hop in the shower, work in the rest of the color to strands and ends.

  5. Lather color and rinse. (Take precaution to avoid getting color in the eyes.)

  6. Then apply shampoo (loved the one eSalon sent in the packet. It’s specifically for color treated hair and smells great!) And then conditioner.

And wallah! There you have it. While on the IG LIVE I was asked what hair mask I liked for dry hair and damaged hair. I have recently come across a Dallas based hair product company that I love, Fave4! The products smell great and their Fave4 Take Me to Tahiti Mask works great to nourish and condition.
